Overview

Tsavo East National Park is Kenya’s largest national park, covering 13,747 km² of untamed wilderness. Established in 1948, it is part of the greater Tsavo ecosystem (together with Tsavo West) and is often called the “Theatre of the Wild.”
The park is famed for its vast landscapes, red-dust elephants, the Yatta Plateau (world’s longest lava flow), and the life-giving Galana River. Its wide open plains make it a paradise for photographers and adventurers who want to experience a true African wilderness, less crowded than the Maasai Mara or Amboseli.
With its semi-arid terrain, seasonal rivers, and rugged beauty, Tsavo East offers raw, authentic safari experiences with incredible game viewing.

Highlights

  • Red Elephants: Herds of elephants dust themselves with the park’s rich red soil, creating a spectacular sight.
  • Big Cats: Lions (including the famous “Man-Eaters of Tsavo” legend), leopards, and cheetahs.
  • Other Wildlife: Buffalo, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, hyenas, ostriches, kudu, and gerenuk.
  • Birdlife: Over 500 species including weavers, hornbills, kingfishers, and martial eagles.
  • Special Features: The Yatta Plateau (300 km lava flow), Mudanda Rock (natural water catchment), and Lugard Falls on the Galana River.
