Overview

Samburu National Reserve is a semi-arid wilderness located in northern Kenya’s Rift Valley Province, covering 165 km² along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River. Despite its smaller size compared to other parks, Samburu is world-renowned for its unique wildlife, striking landscapes, and rich Samburu culture.
The reserve is set against a backdrop of rugged hills, volcanic rocks, and vast savannah plains, with the lifeline of the Ewaso Nyiro River cutting through the reserve. This river attracts a wealth of wildlife, making Samburu one of the most rewarding game-viewing destinations in Kenya.
What truly sets Samburu apart is the presence of the Samburu Special Five — rare species that are not found in southern parks like the Mara or Amboseli.

Highlights

  • Samburu Special Five (Unique to Northern Kenya):Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx, Reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, Gerenuk
  • Big Cats & Predators: Lions, cheetahs, leopards, wild dogs (sometimes sighted).
  • Elephants: Large herds thrive here, often seen at the riverbanks.
