Overview

Lake Naivasha is a breathtaking freshwater lake located in the heart of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, about 90 km northwest of Nairobi. At an elevation of 1,884 meters (6,180 feet), it is the highest Rift Valley lake and a UNESCO Ramsar wetland site of international importance.

The lake is fringed with papyrus swamps, acacia woodlands, and flower farms, creating a lush oasis that contrasts beautifully with the surrounding semi-arid landscape. Lake Naivasha is especially famous for its hippos, abundant birdlife (over 450 species), and boat safaris that bring travelers up close to wildlife.

Unlike fenced national parks, Lake Naivasha is open and free-flowing, offering a unique mix of wildlife, landscapes, and cultural experiences.

Highlights

  • Hippos: Hundreds live in the lake and are often spotted on boat safaris.
  • Birdlife: Over 450 species including African fish eagles, kingfishers, cormorants, pelicans, herons, and flamingos (seasonal).
  • Giraffes, Zebras, and Antelopes: Found in nearby Crescent Island Game Sanctuary.
  • Colobus Monkeys: Common in the acacia forests around the lake.
